Psychiatric Nursing Education Programs
The CRPNBC is responsible for establishing the standards of academic achievement required for registration as a psychiatric nurse in BC, and for recognizing educational programs that meet these standards. The following documents set out these standards, and our recognition process:

The following credentials obtained through Douglas College are currently recognized by CRPNBC as meeting the educational requirements for registration as an RPN:
- Diploma in Psychiatric Nursing
This program is now closed, with its final intake having taken place in January 2016. This does not affect the eligibility of those who have completed the program to register with CRPNBC.
- Psychiatric Nursing Refresher (Certificate Program)
This program is for previously-registered RPNs wishing to re-register as a Practicing registrant with CRPNBC, but do not meet the continuing competence requirements as set out in Schedule H of the CRPNBC Bylaws.
Douglas College also offers a degree completion program for RPNs with diplomas, wishing to obtain a Bachelor’s degree. This is an academic credential only, and is not recognized as meeting the education requirements for registration.
Kwantlen Polytechnic University
The following credential obtained through Kwantlen Polytechnic University is currently recognized by CRPNBC as meeting the educational requirements for registration as an RPN:
Kwantlen Polytechnic University also offers a degree completion program for RPNs with diplomas, wishing to obtain a Bachelor’s degree. This is an academic credential only, and is not recognized as meeting the education requirements for registration.
The following credential obtained through Stenberg College is currently recognized as meeting the educational requirements for registration as an RPN:
- Regional Diploma in Psychiatric Nursing
This program offers the opportunity to earn a diploma in psychiatric nursing while living in a region outside the lower mainland.
Psychiatric nursing programs outside of British Columbia
Psychiatric nursing education programs are currently offered in three other Canadian provinces- Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan. The recognition process for these programs is administered by the College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Alberta, the College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Manitoba, and the Registered Psychiatric Nurses Association of Saskatchewan respectively.
The following education programs are currently recognized as meeting the education requirements for registration as an RPN in Canada:
- Alberta – Psychiatric Nursing Diploma program, offered by Grant MacEwan University.
- Manitoba – Bachelor of Science in Psychiatric Nursing, offered by Brandon University.
- Saskatchewan – Psychiatric Nursing Diploma Program, offered by Saskatchewan Polytechnic.
Graduates of approved psychiatric nursing programs in these other provinces may apply for registration with CRPNBC as an interprovincial applicant.
Outside of Canada
Those who have completed their psychiatric nursing education outside of Canada must apply for registration with CRPNBC as an international applicant, unless they have first been registered as an RPN in Alberta, Manitoba or Saskatchewan.
