CRPNBC Awards of Excellence

1. NOMINATION CRITERIA
a. The CRPNBC Awards of Excellence are presented to Registered Psychiatric Nurses in recognition of:

  • outstanding contributions to one of the 4 domains of psychiatric nursing; and/or
  • demonstrated excellence in improving mental health services in British Columbia.

b. The recipient will have surpassed the standards of practice and demonstrated resourcefulness beyond the expected level in psychiatric nursing, and is an exemplary role model and mentor to peers.

2. PURPOSE OF THE AWARDS

a. To acknowledge contributions of Registered Psychiatric Nurses to the profession within specific areas of practice;
b. To provide recognition that will enhance the image of the Registered Psychiatric Nurse and the profession; and
c. To increase public awareness of services and contributions made by Registered Psychiatric Nurses.

3. ELIGIBILITY

a. Nominees for all CRPNBC awards must have current practicing CRPNBC registration in good standing or have been registered in the previous year in good standing.
b. Members of the CRPNBC Awards Committee are prohibited from being a CRPNBC award nominee or nominator.
c. Registrants may not be nominated for more than one category per calendar year and may not be awarded the same CRPNBC award more than once.

4. NOMINATING PROCESS

a. Each year, a call for nominations will be sent to all registrants of the CRPNBC and posted on the website.
b. The nominee must be a practicing registrant in good standing with the College.
c. Supporting letters: Nominations must be supported by three letters that strongly demonstrates the award criteria.
d. When considering the nomination, it is important that the nominee has clearly demonstrated excellence above and beyond the role and responsibilities of his/her current position.
e. It is important that the letters contain specific demonstrated behavioral examples of how the nominee has met the criteria in a particular category.
f. One of the letters will be from the principal nominator and the other two will support the nomination.
g. The Nomination must include a resume from the nominee

5. SELECTION PROCESS

a. A CRPNBC Awards Committee, appointed by the Board of Directors, will review all nominations, ensuring proper process and criteria are met. The Committee will present recommendations to the Board of Directors for final approval.
b. If there is no suitable nominee in a particular category, an award will not be presented.
c. Once the decision has been made, the Award recipients and principal nominators will be informed by the Executive Director for CRPNBC and arrangements will be made for the award recipient and one other person of their choosing to attend the AGM for the presentation of the award.

6. AWARD PRESENTATION

The Awards are presented at the Annual General Meeting of the College of the Psychiatric Nurses of British Columbia

OVERVIEW OF AWARD CATEGORIES

1. Excellence in Psychiatric Nursing Practice

The Registered Psychiatric Nurse is being recognized for making a significant contribution over and above normal expectations in his/her area of clinical practice; and has exhibited a high degree of professionalism in his/her career. Including but not limited to:

a. providing leadership in the development/implementation of programs/intervention strategies for clients, families and the community;
b. influencing change in service delivery in a positive manner;
c. furthering client empowerment through his/her practice;
d. striving to ensure the best quality of service to clients;
e. contributing to the ongoing development of the profession and sharing expertise with others;
f. demonstrating an exemplary commitment to ethical practice;
g. demonstrating a commitment to ongoing professional development/continuing education;
h. demonstrating a commitment to professional and community leadership.

2. Excellence in Psychiatric Nursing Leadership/Administration Award

The Registered Psychiatric Nurse is being recognized for demonstrating exceptional leadership in psychiatric nursing over and above normal expectations in administration/leadership. Including but not limited to:

a. developing and implementing innovative programs;
b. demonstrating leadership in the administration of the delivery of human services;
c. demonstrating innovative thinking, flexibility and creative problem solving;
d. acting as mentor and role model for peers, employees and the public at large;
e. motivating and creating positive change in others and his/her environment;
f. participating in community action which promotes mental health;
g. motivating others to high standards;
h. stimulating pride in the profession by being a positive example;
i. demonstrating a commitment to professional and community leadership.

3. Excellence in Psychiatric Nursing Research Award

The Registered Psychiatric Nurse is being recognized for having demonstrated excellence and innovation over and above normal expectations in psychiatric nursing research. Including but not limited to:

a. contributing to the body of knowledge for the profession of psychiatric nursing;
b. contributing to the advancement of psychiatric nursing practice;
c. providing leadership and mentoring in research activities;
d. contributing to innovative education processes;
e. publishing articles which promote an understanding of mental health issues and/or the profession;
f. demonstrating a commitment to professional and community leadership.

4. Excellence in Psychiatric Nursing Education Award

The Registered Psychiatric Nurse is being recognized for having demonstrated excellence over and above normal expectations in psychiatric nursing education.
Including but not limited to:

a. inspiring learners through innovative and dynamic teaching methods;
b. making a contribution to his/her area of teaching;
c. initiating the sharing of knowledge with peers and students;
d. being instrumental in the implementation of educational changes;
e. demonstrating a commitment to continuing education by example;
f. demonstrating a commitment to professional and community leadership.
